Getting Started
Driving Licence
Before your first driving lesson, you need to be 17 or over and hold a valid provisional driving licence. You can get an application form from the Post Office or apply on-line.
Apply 3 months before you turn 17 if you would like to start taking lessons on your birthday - at the same time begin to hint that you would like driving lessons as a birthday gift!!
For people who already have a licence and want to start driving again you simply need your signed, valid full driving licence and photo ID if you have the old style licence.
Eyesight
You must be able to read the number plate on a stationary vehicle. The distance requirement using old style number plates is 20.5 metres or 20 metres if the new-style number plate is used. New-style number plates are easily identifiable starting with two letters eg AB 51 ABC.
It is worth having an eyesight test before you book your first lesson. If you wear glasses or contact lenses it is a legal requirement that you always wear them whenever driving.
The Highway Code
The Highway Code is essential reading for everybody learning to drive. It contains all of the rules and regulations that relate to driving in the UK. The sooner you read this important book the easier you will incorporate what you learn from it into your driving.
Comfort and Safety
To get the most out of your lessons, think ahead and prepare beforehand.
Comfortable clothes and shoes are a must.
You need to be alert during your lesson - alcohol and a late night is not advised the day before. In addition, some medicines can make you drowsy and unsafe to drive so tell your instructor if this applies.
